A love story full of ghosts and curses, Ruddigore is Gilbert and Sullivan’s take on Victorian melodrama, full of great music and ingenious Gilbertian wit. It is set around 1804. We have Sir Despard the obligatory villain, Robin Oakapple the hero, Rose Maybud the heroine, and a number of other characters to add life to the plot. But all is not as it seems: the story centres around an incongruous curse placed on the first baronet of Ruddigore, Sir Rupert Murgatroyd, and which is so powerful that it can transcend the normal boundaries of time and perpetuate itself ad infinitum down through all the direct inheritors of the title. Gilbert provides his usual twist at the end to ensure a satisfactory resolution to the story.

So said the Pirate King in unfolding to Frederic the ingenious paradox of the leap year in the second act of Pirates.

The paradox will start to unfold with a talk by Alex Scutt on the Astronomer Royal and his place in Victorian society entitled “Some person in authority” by Alex Scutt. In a year where Australia will have the best seats in the house for a transit of Venus in June, it’s a great opportunity to hear how astronomy, history and music come together in the person who was Astronomer Royal.
